We leave the Kruger, climbing the mountains one last time to go back to the central plateau, bound to Johannesburg and the finishing line of our great journey by tractor. Back to cooler, gentler climates tempered by altitude, we reach Tzaneen. A thriving farming town set in a fertile, lush region blessed with a tropical climate often dubbed “the land of the silver mist” because of the clouds that often shroud the surrounding mountains, Tzaneen is also known as “Limpopo ‘s paradise” for reasons that are quite easy to see. Roughly 40% of South Africa’s avocados are harvested around here, as well as 40% of its mangoes, 20% of the bananas and 90% of tomato crops, all set against a luxuriant backdrop of vast pine and eucalyptus plantations. A Garden of Eden indeed!
